VRF and mini split systems show a fault code when a sensor, refrigerant, drain, or communication wire fails. This page lists the most common Mitsubishi City Multi, Daikin VRV, and Fujitsu AIRSTAGE codes, what each one means, and whether you need to stop running the system. Vinco Mechanical services VRF and mini splits across all five NYC boroughs.
Error codes are a starting point, not a fix. If your system keeps throwing the same code, stop running it and call a technician. Repeated resets can destroy a compressor and turn a $400 repair into a $4,000 one. Not sure whether to fix or replace? Read our repair-vs-replace guide. If the code points to end-of-life, Con Edison and NYS Clean Heat rebates can cover a large share of replacement.
Your VRF showing error codes is one thing. Whether to fix or replace depends on age, refrigerant, and repair cost.
Read our repair-vs-replace guide for the decision framework Vinco techs use on every NYC service call.
Read the guideIf your VRF was installed before 2025, it uses R-410A. Replacement parts and new systems are shifting to A2L.
Why the R-454B / R-32 transition matters for VRF repair decisions and what it changes about replacement timing.
Why this matters for VRF24 codes. Tap any code to expand.

Same fault, different code.
Mitsubishi, Daikin, and Fujitsu all protect against the same failure modes. They just use different code numbers.
Communication errors across brands
Comm errors mean the indoor and outdoor units can no longer talk. Almost always a wiring issue after renovation, a tripped breaker on the outdoor unit, or a failed PCB.
| Fault | Mitsubishi | Daikin | Fujitsu |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indoor to outdoor comm loss | E6 | U4 | E:10 |
| Outdoor to outdoor (twin / triple) | E7 | UA | E:11 |
| Remote controller to indoor | E0 / E1 | A1 (PCB) | E:12 |
Refrigerant pressure errors across brands
High pressure usually means dirty condenser, blocked airflow, or overcharge. Low pressure usually means a leak. Running a system through repeated pressure trips destroys the compressor.
| Fault | Mitsubishi | Daikin | Fujitsu |
|---|---|---|---|
| High pressure trip | U1 / UA | E3 / F6 | E:21 |
| Low pressure / refrigerant shortage | U2 | E4 / U0 | E:23 |
| Discharge temp too high | U2 | F3 | E:22 |
Drain and condensate errors across brands
NYC condensate is a huge failure point: shared risers, algae, kitchen grease, crushed lines inside wall cavities. If you see one of these codes, turn the unit off to avoid a ceiling leak.
| Fault | Mitsubishi | Daikin | Fujitsu |
|---|---|---|---|
| Float switch / drain overflow | P4 | A3 | E:32 |
| Condensate pump fault | P5 | A3 | E:31 |

What does Mitsubishi error code 5201 mean?
5201 on a Mitsubishi City Multi VRF points to a suction pipe thermistor fault on the indoor unit (TH22). The controller locks the zone because it cannot trust the suction temperature reading. Typical fix is a thermistor replacement, usually under an hour of labor. Common after 10+ years in NYC installs. Call (212) 810-0915 for a diagnostic.
What does Daikin error code U0 or U4 mean?
U0 means refrigerant shortage, the system detected low superheat or pressure consistent with a leak. U4 means communication error between an indoor unit and the outdoor unit, usually a damaged F1/F2 wire, reversed polarity, or a PCB fault. Both codes require a licensed technician. Do not add refrigerant on a U0 without a proper leak search.
Can I keep running my mini split with an error code?
It depends on the code. Sensor faults and minor comm errors sometimes let the system limp along in a reduced mode. High pressure, low pressure, compressor overcurrent, fan motor fault, and drain overflow codes all mean stop running it now. Repeated resets on a protection trip destroy compressors. If your code shows a high severity rating on this page, shut the system off and call (212) 810-0915.
Does low refrigerant damage the compressor?
Yes. A system low on refrigerant runs hot, loses its oil return, and overheats the compressor windings. A few weeks of operating with a slow leak can turn a $400 sensor repair into a $4,000 compressor replacement. If you see U0 on a Daikin, U2 on a Mitsubishi, or E:23 on a Fujitsu, stop the system and book a leak search.
What error codes mean a refrigerant leak?
The leak-indicator codes are Mitsubishi U2 (low pressure and refrigerant shortage), Daikin U0 and E4 (shortage and low pressure switch), and Fujitsu E:23 (low pressure protection). These need a licensed NYC HVAC tech with an electronic leak detector. We use nitrogen pressure testing plus electronic detection to find even slow leaks.
Why does my system keep throwing the same error code?
Modern mini splits and VRF systems track how many times the same code fires in a rolling window. Repeated trips on the same protection (high pressure, low pressure, overcurrent) tell you the root cause is still there. Resetting at the breaker does not fix the underlying fault, it just kicks the can. Book a service call so a tech can read the service data, find the root cause, and fix it once.
How fast can Vinco respond to a VRF or mini split error code?
Severity-based dispatch across all five boroughs, prioritized by severity. Manhattan and Brooklyn typically see a truck soonest when booked by severity. Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island typically land severity-based dispatch. We carry Mitsubishi, Daikin, and Fujitsu parts on the truck. Call (212) 810-0915.
