Who is a licensed HVAC contractor in NYC?

In NYC, DOB GC and DCWP HIC answer different questions about an HVAC contractor. NYC DOB General Contractor registration covers Building Department filings, DOB permits, commercial work, multifamily work, and filed mechanical scopes. DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license covers consumer-facing residential home-improvement work, including central heating and air conditioning system work that meets the NYC Admin Code §20-386 home-improvement definition.

A DCWP HIC number alone does not replace a DOB GC license for DOB-filed work. A DOB GC license alone does not replace a DCWP HIC license for covered residential home-improvement contracts. Ask for both when the job is residential and permit-related. Every NYC DOB Contractor registration is a public record. Use DOB BIS at a810-bisweb.nyc.gov for DOB license lookup, and use DOB NOW Public Portal for filings that originated in DOB NOW (DOB NOW jobs do not appear in BIS). The lookup returns license type, legal entity, status (active, lapsed, suspended), issue and expiration dates, and any open complaints or violations.

For Vinco's DOB GC, search license 022359. For DCWP HIC verification, search Vinco Mechanical at nyc.gov/dca. The DCWP HIC lookup confirms #2135244 and the active status (expiring 2027-02-28). If a contractor's claimed license number does not return a record, or returns a different entity name, that is a red flag worth resolving before signing a contract.

Four: a current Workers' Compensation and Disability Benefits certificate. Five: at least one verifiable named project in a building of similar type and vintage.
